ངན་སེམས་ཀྱིས་ནི་ཁྲག་ཕྱུང་དང་། །ཕམ་པར་འགྱུར་བ་བཞི་པོ་དང་། །

as the wisest of the wise and the most confident of the confident,
ཤེས་རབ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་དང་། སྤོབས་པ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་མཆོག་ཏུ་བསྟན་པ་

never in my life have i seen anyone carry himself like this renunciant.
རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་བ་འདིའི་སྤྱོད་ལམ་ལྟ་བུ་ནི་བདག་གིས་སྔན་ཆད་འགའ་ཡང་མ་མཐོང་བས་

as the wisest of the wise and the most confident of the confident.’“
ཤེས་རབ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་དང་། སྤོབས་པ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་མཆོག་ཏུ་བསྟན་པར་གྱུར་ཅིག་ཅེས་

knowing this being was certain to become one of the fortunate, the venerable Śāriputra

བཙུན་པ་གཡོན་ཅན་རབ་ཏུ་མང་པོ་དག་གིས་དགེ་སློང་མ་རབ་ཏུ་མང་པོ་དག་ལུས་བསྐྱོད་པས་སུན་ཕྱུང་བ་གང་དག་ལགས་པ་དེ་དག་གི་ནང་ནས་གཅིག་བདག་ལགས་སོ། །

“you have been ordained into the teachings of the most wise. to find leisure and opportunity is rare, so heed them perfectly.
ཁྱོད་ནི་བསྙེན་པར་རྫོགས་པར་གྱུར། །དལ་དང་འབྱོར་པ་རྙེད་དཀའ་བས། །འདི་དག་ཇི་ལྟ་བཞིན་དུ་སྒྲུབས། །

and was singled out by the tathāgata, the arhat, the perfectly awakened buddha kāśyapa as the wisest of the wise and the most confident of the confident.
དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པ་དགྲ་ བཅོམ་པ་ཡང་དག་པར་རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་འོད་སྲུང་གིས་ཤེས་རབ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་དང་སྤོབས་པ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་མཆོག་ཏུ་བསྟན་ཏོ།

“reverend, what has the venerable Śāriputra done that the ripened fruit of his action has led him to be singled out by the blessed one as the wisest of the wise and the most confident of the confident?”
བཙུན་པ་ཚེ་དང་ལྡན་པ་ཤཱ་རིའི་བུས་ལས་ཅི་ཞིག་བགྱིས་ན། ལས་དེའི་རྣམ་པར་སྨིན་པས་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ཀྱིས་ཤེས་རབ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་དང་། སྤོབས་པ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་མཆོག་ཏུ་བསྟན།

for those in possession of the five qualities are reliable.” “reverend, as for one of four years,
ཆོས་ལྔ་དང་ལྡན་པ་ལ་བཅའ་བ་བརྟེན་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ། །བཙུན་པ་ལོ་བཞི་ལགས་ལ།

if the ordinand responds “i have gone forth before,” he inquirer asks him: “did you not transgress and incur one of the four defeats?
གལ་ཏེ་རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་ངོ་ཞེས་ཟེར་ན་ཁྱོད་ལ་ཕམ་པར་འགྱུར་བ་བཞི་ལས་ལྟུང་བ་གང་ཡང་རུང་བ་ཞིག་བྱུང་བ་མ་ཡིན་ནམ། །

no one of the band of riders who sit on their horses looking at those marks saw all or any of that happen. yet each one reads the record unerringly. all is clear to the water’s edge. beyond that the tawny tide of peacock waters keeps its own secret, and the far bank, the distant hostile bank of ngura, is half lost behind the snow that sifts scatteringly out of a cloud whose smoky streamers trail on the changing surface of the river.
