punctuationmary’s plea, by daisy utemorrah is aboriginal poem published in 1975.mary’s plea is an first person aboriginal poem because this poem is related to the after effect of the white men coming and the stolen generation and it is about how she lost her knowledge of her people and she couldn’t get it back and in the poem she say’s “where are you my people” and that is referring to the her race whom is aboriginal. mary’s plea is about the stolen generation and how she is talking about how she is lost in society and wants to know her past. but she can’t since it has been stolen from her and thrown away. she wants to be with her people and learn the past. but she only has her memory. in this poem, lots of poetic devices are used to excite the reader and to get their attention and show how big this problem is. they are all really descriptive and take the reader to a whole new level of writing. in this poem lots of imagery is used such as “i want to smell the smoke of the burnt grass” it is used to enhance our senses and to make the reader fell like they are a part of the poem and feel that we are in the poem looking and smelling at the burnt grass. this poem has a lot of repetition that repeat “i want to, where are you? and where am i?” and that is used to make us think that she is really lost. this poem has a lot of direct address such as “take me back” and that makes us think that she is really lost and doesn’t know anything to get her out of the mental void. this poem has alliteration such as “teach the things” and it is used to make this sentence more exciting. in this poem there is also a metaphor which is “the clouds that o’ver shadow me” in this metaphor the cloud is used to represent the white man conquering her and over shadowing her. the main character who is mary is represented as a victim who just wants to know her history of her people. this poem is a very descriptive poem that has a lot of emotional things that happened.
