finally, some authors have suggested that social control theory may provide an alternative explanation for the differential treatment received by stereotypical and counter-stereotypical defendants observed in previous research (saulters-tubbs, 1993). social control theory proposes that behaviour is controlled within society by external pressures to conform to socially accepted norms and values (van krieken et al., 2000). for example, it would be expected that defendants in general would be viewed negatively for deviating from acceptable standards for social behaviour. social control theory attributes the harsher treatment of counter-stereotypical offenders to dual punishment, that is, punishment for their violation of accepted norms for appropriate behaviour and punishment for their violation of a specific stereotype (saulters-tubbs, 1993).
the measure assessing categorisation as a typical murder also provided some tentative support for this prediction, with the feminine defendant being seen as less like a typical murderer compared to the masculine defendant, but only when the defendant was a woman. while the pairwise comparison was significant, the interaction was not statistically significant despite the effect size being the same size as the significant effect for the defendant gender.
