tasmĀ buddho’smi: therefore, i am the buddha once, the enlightened one was going along a high-road between ukkatthā and setavyā. a brahmin named dona was also going along that path. the brahmin dona saw the enlightened one’s footprints, marked with thousand spoked wheel, all rimmed and hubbed perfectly. on seeing them, it occurred to him that the footprints surely were not made by a human. then he started following the footprints. after a while, the brahman saw, the enlightened one sitting with leg crossed under a certain tree. the enlightened one appeared to him as pleasant, inspiring, peaceful, calm mind, having attained to supreme restraints and mental stillness, tamed, composed with senses subdued, and like a nāga. seeing the enlightened one, he approached him and there a dialogue began:- dona: devo no bhavaṁ bhavissatîti (oh, master, you must be a deva / will you become a deva?) the enlightened one: na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, devo bhavissāmîti. (no, brahmin, i’m not a deva, neither will be) dona: gandhabbo no bhavaṁ bhavissatîti (oh, master, you must be a gandharva / will you become a gandharva?) the enlightened one: na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, gandhabbo bhavissāmîti. (no, brahmin, i’m not a gandharva, neither will be) dona: yakkho no bhavaṁ bhavissatîti (oh, master, you must be a yakshya / will you become a yakshya?) the enlightened one: na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, yakkho bhavissāmîti. (no, brahmin, i’m not a yaksha, neither will be) dona: manusso no bhavaṁ bhavissatîti (oh, master, you must be a human / will you become a human?) the enlightened one: na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, manusso bhavissāmîti. (no, brahmin, i’m not a human, neither will be) dona: kiñ carahi (oh, master, who, then, are you?) reply to this question by the enlightened one is available in two versions in the pali canon, which are as follows: according to (sutta nipata) the enlightened one replied: abhiňňeyyan abhiňňatan, bhāvetabban ca bhāvitan, pahātabban pahinan me, tasmā buddho’ smi brāhmana. that means: i know all the things which are need to be known, i have become what i should have become. i have eradicated what need to be eradicated, therefore, brahmin, i am the buddha. according to doṇa sutta the enlightened one replied: yena devûpapaty-assa, gandhabbo vā vihaṅgamo, yakkhattaṁ yena gaccheyyaṁ, manussattañ ca abbaje, te mayhaṁ āsavā khīṇā, viddhastā vinaḷī,katā. by which one is born as deva, a gandharva who moves through air, by which one attains the yaksha state or attains the human state, these influxes have been ended, demolished, and exterminated by me. further, the enlightened one says, puṇḍarīkaṁ yathā vaggu, toyena n’upalippati, n’upalippāmi lokena, tasmā buddho’smi brāhmaṇâ ti. just like a beautiful lotus, undefiled by the water, undefiled by the world, therefore, brahmin, i am the buddha.
