إنّ عمق الحرق هو ما يحدّد شدّته. فحروق الدّرجة الأولى تتلف الطبقة الخارجيّة من الجلد (البشرة) وتسبّب ألماً واحمراراً وتورّماً (حمامى). وتتلف حروق الدرجة الثانية البشرة والطبقة الداخلية (الأدمة)، ما يحدث حمامى ونُفاطات. أمّا التلف الناجم عن حروق الدرجة الثالثة فيمتدّ إلى اللحمة، ما يتسبّب بتحطم كامل سماكة الجلد مع الأعصاب الواردة له (ن...مل). تخلف حروق الدرجة الثالثة ندوباً وتسبّب الكثير منها فقد للوظيفة وأو الإحساس.
