དེ་ནི་ཡིག་འབྲུའི་ཡི་གེ་དེ་དག་ཉིད་ལ་སློབ་པར་བྱེད་པ་དང་།

they saw that rājagṛha was utterly still and thought,
དེ་ན་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་ཆེམ་མེ་ཆེམས་སེ་འདུག་པ་མཐོང་ནས། དེ་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་བསམས་པ།

while this lad is still learning his letters.”
ཁྱེའུ་འདི་ནི་ད་དུང་ཡིག་འབྲུའི་ཡི་གེ་དག་སློབ་པར་བགྱིད་དོ། །

are everlasting, and are still and solid like a pillar.
ཐེར་ཟུག་ཏུ་གནས་པ། ཀ་བ་བཞིན་དུ་གནས་པ་དག་ཡིན་ནོ།

if the weather is warm, he should bathe with cold water.
གལ་ཏེ་ཚ་བའི་དུས་ཡིན་ན་ནི་ཆུ་གྲང་མོས་ཁྲུས་བྱེད་དུ་གཞུག་གོ། །

after a time, the saṅgha elder lifted his cup of water.
ཇི་ཙམ་ན་དགེ་འདུན་གྱི་གནས་བརྟན་དེས་ཆུ་ཁ་ཕོར་དུ་བླུགས་ནས་

and he thought, “while we drink water as cold as this,
དེས་བསམས་པ། བདག་ཅག་ནི་ཆུ་ཤིན་ཏུ་གྲང་མོ་འདི་ལྟ་བུ་འཐུང་ན།

and acts with purpose and integrity, one still does not gain merit.”
དོན་སྤྱོད་པ་དང་། དོན་མཐུན་པས་དེ་ལྟར་བྱེད་པ་ཡང་བསོད་ནམས་མི་བྱེད་པ་ཁོ་ན་ཡིན་ནོ། །

drinking water, paying reverence to a stūpa in the vicinity of the monastery,
ཆུ་བཏུང་བ་དང་། ཉེ་འཁོར་དང་བཅས་པའི་གཙུག་ལག་ཁང་དུ་མཆོད་རྟེན་ལ་ཕྱག་བྱ་བ་དང་།

but even if they did not achieve it, they would still draw near to the world of brahmā.
གལ་ཏེ་སྒྲུབ་པར་མི་བྱེད་ན་ཡང་ཚངས་པའི་འཇིག་རྟེན་དུ་ཉེ་བར་འགྲོ་བར་འགྱུར་ཏེ།

still in doubt, the monks questioned him who severs all doubts, the blessed buddha,
ཡང་དགེ་སློང་རྣམས་ཐེ་ཚོམ་སྐྱེས་ནས་ཐེ་ཙོམ་ཐམས་ཅད་གཅོད་པ་སངས་རྒྱས་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ལ་ཞུས་པ།

they do not ripen upon the element of water, upon the element of fire, nor upon the element of wind.
ཆུའི་ཁམས་ལ་མི་འགྱུར། མེའི་ཁམས་ལ་མི་འགྱུར། རླུང་གི་ཁམས་ལ་མི་འགྱུར་གྱི།

saṅgharakṣita sprinkled water on, swept, and applied fresh cow dung to the dirt floor of the thatched hut.
ཚེ་དང་ལྡན་པ་དགེ་འདུན་འཚོས་སྤྱིལ་བུ་དེ་ཆག་ཆག་བཏབ། ཕྱག་དར་བྱས། བ་ལང་གི་ལྕི་བ་སར་པས་བྱུག་པ་བྱས་སོ། །

why, then, do you think we’d let you go while you’re still alive?”
གསོན་བཞིན་དུ་གཏང་བ་ལྟ་སྨོས་ཀྱང་ཅི་དགོས།

after a time, the saṅgha elder lifted his cup of water. it felt extremely cold to the touch of the tip of his fingers,
ཇི་ཙམ་ན་དགེ་འདུན་གྱི་གནས་བརྟན་དེས་ཆུ་ཁ་ཕོར་དུ་བླངས་ནས་སོར་མོའི་རྩེ་མོས་རེག་ན་ཤིན་ཏུ་གྲངས་ནས་

filled the folds of his skirt with the dazzling colors of divine blue lotus flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses,
ལྷའི་ཨུཏྤལ་དང་། པད་མ་དང་། ཀུ་མུ་ད་དང་། པད་མ་དཀར་པོ་དག་གིས་ཐུ་བ་བཀང་སྟེ། ཁ་དོག་ཤིན་ཏུ་འདས་པས་

she thought, “this renunciant is still groggy from sleep. i shall return during the final watch.”
དེས་བསམས་པ། རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་བ་འདི་ད་དུང་གཉིད་ཀྱིས་མྱོས་ཀྱིས་ཐུན་ཐ་མ་ལ་འོང་བར་བྱའོ་སྙམ་ནས་

when the monks were counted, the disciplinarian noticed that the monk, who was still committed to his tīrthika order, was missing so he asked,
དགེ་སློང་རྣམས་བསྔོས་པ་ན་དེ་མི་སྣང་ནས་དེས་དྲི་བར་བརྩམས་པ།
