per prima cosa, assicurati di stare modificando la maschera e non il livello, controllando che livellomascheramodifica maschera sia segnato (lo è come impostazione predefinita). a questo punto puoi disegnare sullo strato come prima, solo che ora stai disegnando sulla maschera invece che sullo strato stesso. per smettere di disegnare sulla maschera, puoi deselezionare la casella modifica maschera. c'è anche la possibilità di mostrare la maschera, segnando livellomascheramostra maschera (questo non è selezionato come impostazione predefinita). questa opzione visualizzerà tutto lo strato come una rappresentazione visiva della maschera in scala di grigio invece dello strato vero e proprio. può essere utile per vedere dov'è la maschera, ma non altrettanto quando la vuoi modificare, perché non puoi vedere il livello.
first, make sure you are editing the mask, not the layer, by making sure layermaskedit mask is checked. (this is checked by default.) then you can paint on the layer just like before, only now you are painting on the mask, instead of on the layer itself. to stop painting on the mask, you can uncheck the edit mask checkbox. there's also the option to show the mask, through checking layermaskshow mask. (this is not checked by default). this option will render the entire layer as a visual representation of the mask in greyscale, instead of the actual layer. this can be handy to see where your mask is, but it might be not as handy when you want to edit it, since you cannot look at the actual layer.
