costruito su un contrafforte roccioso a picco sulla val d'astico si trovava a metà della linea difensiva degli altopiani con i forti di spitz vezzena, forte verle e forte campo di luserna ad est, ed i forti cherle, sommo alto e dosso delle somme ad ovest. dei vari forti era anche il più vicino alle linee italiane essendo posto quasi a picco sugli ultimi paesi del vicentino, nei pressi del ex confine italo-austriaco.
