beta-hch is considered to be the most recalcitrant isomer due to its chemical structure (decision poprc-2/10, 2006). under favourable laboratory conditions several strains of bacteria e.g. bacillus brevis, bacillus circulans, dehalobacter sp. in conjuction with sedimentibacter sp., isolated from hch polluted sites, have been identified as beta-hch degraders (gupta et al., 2000; van doesburg et al., 2005).
