پھر (حق سے) پیٹھ پھیر لی اور تکبّر کیا،

stiff-necked, discoursing thereof by night, reviling.
اس سے غرور و تکبّر کرتے ہوئے رات کے اندھیرے میں بے ہودہ گوئی کرتے تھے،

those who were stiff-necked said: verily we are disbelievers in that which ye believe.
(یہ سن کر) متکبر مزاج بڑے کہنے لگے کہ جس چیز پر تم ایمان لائے ہو ہم اس کے کافر و منکر ہیں۔

enter ye the gates of hell as abiders therein. hapless is the abode of the stiff-necked.
(اب آؤ) جہنم میں ہمیشہ رہنے کے لیے (اس کے) دروازوں میں داخل ہو جاؤ، کیا ہی بری جگہ ہے تکبر کرنے والے کی

verily when it was said unto them: there is no god but allah, they ever grew stiff-necked.
ان سے جب کہا جاتا تھا کہ اللہ کے علاوہ کوئی خدا نہیں ہے تو اکڑ جاتے تھے

lo! we have put on their necks carcans reaching unto the chins, so that they are made stiff-necked.
بیشک ہم نے اُن کی گردنوں میں طوق ڈال دیئے ہیں تو وہ اُن کی ٹھوڑیوں تک ہیں، پس وہ سر اوپر اٹھائے ہوئے ہیں،

undoubtedly allah knoweth that which they keep secret and that which they publish; verily he loveth not the stiff- necked.
اللہ یقیناً اِن کے سب کرتوت جانتا ہے چھپے ہوئے بھی اور کھلے ہوئے بھی وہ اُن لوگوں کو ہرگز پسند نہیں کرتا جو غرور نفس میں مبتلا ہوں

and as for those who disbelieved: were not my revelations rehearsed unto you? but ye were stiff necked, and ye were a people guilty.
اور جن لوگوں نے کفر اختیار کیا (ان سے کہا جائے گا) میری آیتیں تمہیں پڑھ کر نہیں سنائی جاتی تھیں؟ مگر تم نے تکبر کیا اور تم مجرم لوگ تھے۔

and those who shall belie our signs and shall be stiff- necked against them--they shall be fellows of the fire; therein they shall be abiders.
اور جن لوگوں نے ہماری آیات کی تکذیب کی اور اکڑ گئے وہ سب جہّنمی ہیں اور اسی میں ہمیشہ رہنے والے ہیں
