since men and women are biologically different it is believed that they have different capabilities
needs and desires. accordingly, society has attributed the gender roles, what is expected, allowed
and valued in women and men in a given situation. society perceived women as biologically and
physically weaker sect. right from the brought up in the family, girls are treated inferior to boys.
while girls are groomed to be tender and submissive, boys are taught to be bold, tough and
dominating. this sociological conditioning has resulted in discrimination, violence and other
negative consequences for both the sexes. hence, it is important to understand and develop
sensitivity towards gender issues.
block-1 gives an overall understanding of gender issues from socio-cultural-political and economic
perspective. this block consists of four units.
unit-1: ‘gender – historical context’ - discusses the changing role of women through
the ages and the impact of tradition and culture in defining the gender roles.
unit-2: ‘gender and socialization’ - socialization means the process of bringing up girls and
boys according to the cultural norms of each society. this unit discusses how gender roles and
gender stereotypes are practiced in the society and how different institutions like – family,
education, employment etc. act as agents of socialization.
unit-3: ‘gender and work’ - this unit gives an overview of employment in organized and un
organized sectors. the various issues relating to gendered division of labour are discussed.
author raises several questions regarding discrimination in employment, non recognition of the
domestic work etc. that needs to be contemplated on a serious note.
unit-4: ‘gender and power’ – power is not equally distributed between men and women.
while men are associated with public sphere of activity, women are associated with private
sphere. resources like education and property were restricted to women. women are often
restricted to occupations like- school teacher, private secretary etc. which have less power.
