11 is related to 100 as x is related to 500 and we can solve this by cross multiplication: 11 100 500 this way: 11 * 500 = x * 100 and clearing: x = 11 * 500 / 100 x = 55 so our answer to this question would be that the population of france is 55 million people.
although it is very convenient to know well the rule of three as a procedure of calculation, normally we will not use it for obtaining simple percentages like the previous one, because it is more direct and fast to do: the population of france is 11% of the population of the eu (500 million), so population of france = 500 * 11% = 55 million in case our calculator does not have the percent symbol (%), we could do 500 * 11 / 100 = 55 million using the proportion 11/100 as we did in ourule of three. or, even more directly, doing mentally the conversion to the unit that we explained in the previous section: 11/100 = 0.11 please note that here we are not increasing (or decreasing) a number, so we do not have to add it to (or subtract it from) the unit, but just applying it to our figure: 500 * 0.11 = 55 million getting of course the same result with all these ways. now, let us suppose that a question says that the population of france was 11% of the population of the eu in 2000, and this percentage has increased by 18% in 2015. they do not give us the population of the eu, but they ask us: what is the new percentage of the population of france over the population of the eu in 2015? here, we have to increase the initial percentage, 11%, by a percentage increase, 18%, according to the question. this is very similar to what we
