due to the current limitations, future research should investigate the stereotypic influences examined in the current study on jurors’ decisions using more externally valid methodology. for example, videotaped trial re-enactments would allow researchers to manipulate the physical appearance of the defendant, which has been found to be a primary influence on the category assigned to an individual (stangor, lynch, duan, & glass, 1992). in addition, future research should aim to further investigate the theoretical issues raised by the current research. for example, it may consider investigating which stereotype jurors use to judge defendants who are congruent with multiple categories (e.g., race and gender), and if this varies as a function of the criminal behaviour engaged in. additionally, further research is needed to establish if male defendants are similarly re-categorised according to gender stereotypes when charged with typically feminine crimes, such as prostitution or shoplifting (c.f., steffensmeier & kramer, 1983).
the measure assessing categorisation as a typical murder also provided some tentative support for this prediction, with the feminine defendant being seen as less like a typical murderer compared to the masculine defendant, but only when the defendant was a woman. while the pairwise comparison was significant, the interaction was not statistically significant despite the effect size being the same size as the significant effect for the defendant gender.
