in de schermafdruk hierboven ziet u een afbeelding die typisch is voor het kstars-programma. u ziet hier een gedeelte van de hemel rondom betelgeuze afgebeeld, de helderste ster in het sterrenbeeld orion. orion is niet lang geleden opgekomen boven de oostelijke horizon. sterren worden getoond met hun werkelijke kleur en relatieve helderheden. in drie hoeken van de schermafdruk ziet u tekstvelden met informatie over de huidige tijd (lt: 17:38:42 23/01/2008), de huidige plaats op aarde (amsterdam, noordholland, nl), en het object dat zich nu in het midden van het beeld bevindt (kijkrichting: betelgeuze (\x orionis)). boven de afbeelding van de sterrenhemel zijn twee werkbalken. de hoofdwerkbalk bevat snelkoppelingen voor menufuncties, en een tijd-beeldelement waarmee u kunt instellen hoe snel de simulatieklok loopt. de weergavewerkbalk bevat knoppen waarmee het tonen van verschillende soorten objecten kan worden aan- en uitgezet. onderaan het scherm is een statusbalk waarin de naam wordt getoond van het object waarop u klikt, en de hemelcoördinaten (rechte klimming/declinatie en azimut/hoogte) van de de positie van de muiscursor in de sterrenkaart.
the above screenshot shows a typical view of the kstars program. you can see the sky display centered on betelgeuse, the brightest star in the constellation orion. orion has just risen above the eastern horizon. stars are displayed with realistic colors and relative brightnesses. in three corners of the sky display, there are on-screen text labels displaying data on the current time (lt: 16:38:42 23 jan 2008), the current geographic location (tucson, arizona, usa), and the current object in the center of the display (focused on: betelgeuse (alpha orionis)). above the sky display, there are two toolbars. the main toolbar contains shortcuts for menu functions, as well as a time-step widget which controls how fast the simulation clock runs. the view toolbar contains buttons that toggle the display of different kinds of objects in the sky. at the bottom of the window, there is a status bar which displays the name of any object you click on, and the sky coordinates (both right ascension/ declination and azimuth/ altitude) of the mouse cursor.
