གལ་ཏེ་ཤི་ཟེར་ན། ཁྱོད་བྲན་མ་ཡིན་ནམ།
if the ordinand says his parents are deceased, he is asked: “are you not a bondsman?

ངས་དེར་སོན་ཅིང་དེར་སོན་པ་ན་རྒ་ཤི་མཐོང་།
i reached it and on reaching it, i saw aging and death,

ཁྱོད་ཤི་བར་གྱུར་ན་ངེད་མི་འདོད་བཞིན་དུ་འབྲལ་གྲང་།
even if you were to die, we would fight to keep you with us.

ཀྱེ་མི་ཁྱོད་གསོན་པ་བས་ཤི་བླའོ་ཞེས་ཟེར་ཞིང་སེམས་ཀྱི་འདོད་པ་དང་། །
oh! you, who are alive and well, you suggest it would be better to die.

གང་ནས་ཤི་འཕོས་པ་དང་། གང་དུ་སྐྱེས་པ་དང་།
where they have passed on from, where they have been born,

ཁ་ཅིག་ན་རེ་གཡང་སར་མཆོངས་ཤིག་ཅེས་ཟེར་རོ། །ཁ་ཅིག་ན་རེ་ཐག་པས་འགེགས་ཏེ་ཤི་ཤིག་ཅེས་ཟེར་ཏེ།
some said, “jump off a cliff”; and some said, “strangle yourself with a rope.”

ང་འདི་སྙམ་དུ་སེམས་ཏེ། གང་མེད་ན་རྒ་ཤི་མི་འབྱུང་ཞིང་གང་འགགས་པས་རྒ་ཤི་འགག་སྙམ་དུ་ང་ཚུལ་བཞིན་ཡིད་ལ་བྱེད་པ་ན།
“i then pondered what must be absent for aging and death not to occur and what must cease for aging and death to cease.

ཁ་ཅིག་ན་རེ་ཐག་པས་འགེགས་ཏེ་ཤི་ཤིག་ཅེས་ཟེར་ཏེ། ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱང་ཤི་བའི་ཐབས་སྟོན་པར་བྱེད་ཀྱི། ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་ཐབས་སྟོན་པ་ནི་འགའ་ཡང་མེད་དོ། །
and some said, “strangle yourself with a rope.” all of them recommended some form of suicide; none could offer any means of expiation.

འོན་ཀྱང་སེམས་ཅན་འདི་དག་གིས་རྒ་ཤི་བས་བླ་མ་ཡོད་བཞིན་དུ་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བ་ཡང་དག་པ་ཇི་ལྟ་བ་བཞིན་རབ་ཏུ་མི་ཤེས་སོ་སྙམ་ནས
and though a higher state exists, beings who age and die know nothing of the perfect remedies that exist.’

དེས་སེམས་ཅན་དམྱལ་བ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ནང་ནས་ཤི་འཕོས་པ་དང་རྒྱལ་ཆེན་བཞིའི་རིས་ཀྱི་ལྷ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ནང་དུ་སྐྱེས་པ་དང་།
thus the former monk matricide saw he had passed from among the denizens of hell and been reborn among the gods in the realms of the four great kings

ང་ཚུལ་བཞིན་ཡིད་ལ་བྱེད་པ་ན། འདི་ལྟར་སྐྱེ་བ་ཡོད་ན་རྒ་ཤི་འབྱུང་ཞིང་སྐྱེ་བའི་རྐྱེན་གྱིས་རྒ་ཤི་འབྱུང་ངོ་སྙམ་དུ་ཡང་དག་པ་ཇི་ལྟ་བ་བཞིན་མངོན་པར་རྟོགས་པར་གྱུར་ཏོ། །
on proper reflection, i realized this perfectly and as it is: if there is becoming, there will be birth, and becoming contributes to the occurrence of birth.

གང་གི་ཚེ་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་ལོ་ཉི་ཤུ་རྩ་དགུ་པ་ཞེས་ཀྱང་འདོད་པ་དག་ལ་མ་རོལ་ཏེ་རྒན་པོ་དང་། ན་བ་དང་། ཤི་བ་གཟིགས་པས་ཐུགས་བྱུང་ནས་
when the blessed bodhisattva reached the age of twenty-nine, he ceased to revel in desires, for the sight of the elderly, the sick, and the dead had moved him deeply.
