later the portuguese made unsuccessful attempts to take the canary islands from the spaniards. it is most probably during one of their trips home from madeira that, while sailing on the open ocean to better take advantage of the wind, they caught sight of the azores. from then on, this detour via the open ocean ("volta do largo" in portuguese - i.e. this huge jibing maneuver) became common practice among portuguese fleets, which used it successfully even if, having reached the tropical belt and experienced the equatorial calms, they used it to circumvent the latter and head south.
