lisbon, portugal is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in western europe, lisbon, the capital city of portugal, revolves around its strategic geographical position at the mouth of the tagus, the longest river in the iberian peninsula. its spacious and sheltered natural harbour made the city historically an important seaport for trade between the mediterranean sea and northern europe. lisbon has long enjoyed the commercial advantages of its proximity to southern and extreme wes
western europe, as well as to sub-saharan africa and the americas, and today its waterfront is lined with kilometers of docks, and wharves, that accommodate the largest oil tankers. you can ride on the famous lisbon trams and sit back as you tour lisbon’s main historical sights. the quaint yellow remodelado trams rattle through the city passing important attractions such as the basilica da estrela, the grand assembleia da república, the ancient se cathedral, and the baroque-styled santo antónio church. unlike many other european city destinations, you can be amazed at the sights of the city in the morning then hop on the train and be plunging your toes into the soft sand and breathe in the salty sea air in just under half an hour. you can really get the best of both worlds in lisbon.
