75 lakhs to the east india company in 1846 in exchange for kashmir and some other areas under a treaty later named as treaty of amritsar. jammu and kashmir as a single entity was unified and founded by maharaja gulab singh on 16 march 1846. zorawar singh, a general in the dogra corps of the khalsa army of maharaja ranjit singh, later led daredevil campaigns in northern areas like ladakh, baltistan, gilgit, hunza and yagistan, consolidating smaller principalities and making the northern areas a part of the expanding dominions of maharaja gulab singh.
અંગ્રેજો સામે હાર્યા ત્યાં સુધી શીખ કાશ્મીર પર શાશન કરતા હતા. ત્યારબાદ અમૃતસરની સંધિ અનુસાર જમ્મુના મહારાજા ગુલાબ સિંઘે ઈસ્ટ ઇન્ડિયા કંપનીને ૧૮૪૬માં કાશ્મીર અને અન્ય કેટલાક પ્રદેશ માટે રુ. ૭૫ લાખ આપ્યા. ૧૬ માર્ચ ૧૮૪૬ના દિવસે મહારાજ ગુલાબ સિંઘે જમ્મુ અને કાશ્મીરને એક કરીને અને રજવાડાની સ્થાપના કરી. મહારાજા રણજીત સિંઘના ખાલસા સૈન્યના ડોગરા દળની મદદથી બહાદુર સેનાપતિ જોરાવર સિંઘએ લદ્દાખ, બાલ્ટિસ્તાન, ગિલગિટ, હુન્ઝા અને યાગિસ્તાન પર કબ્જો કરી અને નાના રજવાડાઓને એક કરી અને મહારાજા ગુલાબ સિંઘના રાજ્યમાં વધારો કર્યો. ૧૮૪૧માં જોરાવર સિંઘે તિબેટ પર એક ખૂબ જ મહત્ત્વાકાંક્ષી હુમલો કર્યો હતો.
