i tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the lord.

i wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
わたしは前の手紙で、不品行な者たちと交際してはいけないと書いたが、

i charge you by the lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
わたしは主によって命じる。この手紙を、みんなの兄弟に読み聞かせなさい。

ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
わたしたちの推薦状は、あなたがたなのである。それは、わたしたちの心にしるされていて、すべての人に知られ、かつ読まれている。

she said: o chiefs! verily there hath been cast unto me an honourable epistle.
かの女（王）は言った。「長老たちよ，本当に尊い手紙がわたしに届けられました。

ここでパウロ自身が、手ずからあいさつを書く。これは、わたしのどの手紙にも書く印である。わたしは、このように書く。

and if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
もしこの手紙にしるしたわたしたちの言葉に聞き従わない人があれば、そのような人には注意をして、交際しないがよい。彼が自ら恥じるようになるためである。

therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
そこで、兄弟たちよ。堅く立って、わたしたちの言葉や手紙で教えられた言伝えを、しっかりと守り続けなさい。

so when they were dismissed, they came to antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:
さて、一行は人々に見送られて、アンテオケに下って行き、会衆を集めて、その書面を手渡した。

and when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from laodicea.
この手紙があなたがたの所で朗読されたら、ラオデキヤの教会でも朗読されるように、取り計らってほしい。またラオデキヤからまわって来る手紙を、あなたがたも朗読してほしい。

for though i made you sorry with a letter, i do not repent, though i did repent: for i perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
そこで、たとい、あの手紙であなたがたを悲しませたとしても、わたしはそれを悔いていない。あの手紙がしばらくの間ではあるが、あなたがたを悲しませたのを見て悔いたとしても、

forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the spirit of the living god; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
そして、あなたがたは自分自身が、わたしたちから送られたキリストの手紙であって、墨によらず生ける神の霊によって書かれ、石の板にではなく人の心の板に書かれたものであることを、はっきりとあらわしている。

as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
彼は、どの手紙にもこれらのことを述べている。その手紙の中には、ところどころ、わかりにくい箇所もあって、無学で心の定まらない者たちは、ほかの聖書についてもしているように、無理な解釈をほどこして、自分の滅亡を招いている。
