5 käesolevas direktiivis on "abiaine" iseseisvalt toidu koostisainena mittetarbitav aine, mida toorainete, toiduainete või nende koostisainete töötlemisel teatava tehnoloogilise käitlemis- või töötlemiseesmärgi saavutamiseks kavatsetult kasutatakse ja mis ise või mille derivaatide jäägid võivad tahtmatult, kuid tehniliselt vältimatult olla lõpptootes tingimusel, et need jäägid ei tekita ohtu tervisele ja neil ei ole mingit tehnoloogilist mõju lõpptootele.
for the purpose of this directive, 'processing aid' means any substance not consumed as a food ingredient by itself, intentionally used in the processing of raw materials, foods or their ingredients, to fulfil a certain technological purpose during treatment or processing and which may result in the unintentional but technically unavoidable presence of residues of the substance or its derivatives in the final product, provided that these residues do not present any health risk and do not have and technological effect on the finished product.
