today is international nurses day. an annual celebration of the essential role of nurses around the world. it is particularly special this year, because of the extraordinary work being done by our brave nurses in their fight against covid-19. we thank and salute every single one of them. as of yesterday, south africa had ten-thousand-six-hundred and fifty two (10,652) people who have tested positive for covid-19. most of the new infections are in two provinces - the western cape and the eastern cape. in a letter issued by president cyril ramaphosa yesterday on 11 may, he said that experts agree that the virus will remain a threat to global public health for some time. and that we must therefore be prepared to deal with covid-19 in our communities for a year, or even more. he also said that our success in overcoming the virus will be determined by the changes we make in our behaviour. in all that we do, we must take care of our own health and the health of others. this means that even after lockdown – especially after lockdown – we will still need to observe social distancing, wear face masks, and wash our hands regularly with soap and water. in many south african homes, the measures that have been taken to slow down the spread of covid-19, have sadly left families struggling to survive and children going to bed hungry. today we asked to answer some of your questions about food relief.
