relation to the gross national income, which are the only figures available in this exercise. knowing that the sum of aid, 10.75 billion usd, represents 0.48% (so 0.0048 in unit format) of the gross national income of france, we can easily deduce that the gross national income multiplied by 0.0048 has to be equal to 10.75 billion, and set this equation, being the unknown x the gross national income of france: x * 0.0048 = 10.75 x = 10.75 / 0.0048 = 2239.58 billion usd therefore, the most approximate (as our question asked) answer option is d) usd 2 150 billion, so the right one in this case. my advice this exercise has a couple of shortcuts that could be very useful to you for other questions at your exam too, so we will explain them. first, you do not need to use an equation in these simple questions, but just using your numerical reasoning. if you have an amount, 10.75, and its relation to another one, 0.48% (so it is a little part of the other), you can only do two operations: multiply or divide. and having into account that we have to get a bigger number (the gross national income), and our factor is less than the unit (0.0048), we must certainly divide. so, skipping the equation, we would directly do: 10.75 / 0.0048. at this point, you can review our practices about multiplying and dividing by more/less than the unit in my first book. 52
