filipino international master daniel quizon mustered enough wits in the ninth and final round in besting malaysian muhd faqih aminuddin and edging mongolian munkhdalai amilal to rule the eastern asia juniors championships in sabah, malaysia. the 19-year-old quizon caught up with amilal, who drew his final-round game with indonesian fabian glen mariano, then beat the latter via tiebreak, 48.5-47, to claim the crown – his second here after his 2018 reign in south korea where he earned his im title and a grandmaster norm. quizon almost lost it after a stinging defeat to indonesian im adiya bagus arfan in the seventh round. but he turned catastrophe to victory after he won over countryman im michael concio jr. in the penultimate round and pulled off that last-gasp win that completed the come-from-behind title conquest. quizon’s victory cushioned the impact of four filipinos crashing into the top 10 -- concio (fifth), jan clifford labog (sixth), fide master christian gian karlo arca (eighth) and ivan travis cu (10th).
