esaminiamo la croce dall'alto: sulla prima trasversale, più ampia rispetto al cartello romano imposto da ponzio pilato con la scritta "inri", si nota il senso cosmico voluto dalla tradizione ortodosso/bizantina, con in alto la figura di cristo salvatore con l'aureola (nimbo) nella quale sono incise le abituali lettere greche che stanno ad indicare "colui che e'", e sotto, ai lati, i due cherubini dalle sei ali e dal volto umano, collegati dalla scritta "angeli del signore", che attendono l'anima ed il corpo del figlio di dio onnipotente; sotto gli angeli, la frase "re della gloria"; ai lati del limbo le lettere "gesù figlio di dio", e nel limbo, la due solite lettere già menzionate sopra. ai lati della traversa orizzontale della croce appaiono il sole e la luna che rappresentano l'intero sistema cosmico, sotto, la scritta: "in nome del tuo sacrificio attendiamo la resurrezione della tua gloria" - in alcuni casi, tale scritta, viene sostituita dalle seguenti parole: "inchiniamoci alla tua croce e glorifichiamo la tua resurrezione".
