अवरक्त विकिरण का उत्सर्जन तापमान की चौथी शक्ति पर निर्भर करता है वातावरण की उपरी तह से ज्यादा लम्बी विकिरण उत्सर्जित होती है और निचली तह से यह कम होती है . ज्यादातर विकिरण जो उपरी वातावरण से उत्सर्जित होती है खला में चली जाती है जबकि निचले वातावरण से उत्सर्जित होने वाली विकिरण दोबारा वतावारव द्वारा सोख ली जाती है . इस प्रकार ग्रीन हाउस प्रभाव वातावरण में तापमान के ऊंचाई के साथ कम होने की रफ़्तार पे निर्भर करता है अगर तापमान की दर कम है तो ग्रीन हाउस असर ज्यादा होगा और अगर तापमान गिरने की दर कम है तो ग्रीन हाउस असर कम होगा . सिद्धांत और मॉडल दोनों यह संकेत करते हैं की वार्मिंग से ऊंचाई के साथ तापमान का गिरना कम हो जाएगा जिससे एक नकारात्मक lapse rate feedback पैदा हो जाएगा और इससे ग्रीन हाउस असर कमज़ोर होगा . ऊंचाई के साथ तापमान परिवर्तन की दर का मापन छोटी - छोटी त्रुटियों के प्रति बहुत सवेंदेंशील होता है इससे यह पता करना बहुत मुश्किल हो जाता है की मॉडल हकीकत से मेल खाता है के नही .
the emission temperature of infrared radiation depends on the intensity , from the upper layers of the atmosphere longwave radiation is emitted , and from the lower layers , this is less . most of the radiation emitted from the upper layers goes into the space , whereas the radiation from the lower layers enters the atmosphere again and gets absorbed by it . in this way , the green house effect depends on the rate of decrease of temperature with the height . if the temperature decrease rate is less green house effect is less and vice versa . theories and models both indicate that due to the worming effect , the decrease in temperature as we go up is reduced . a negative lapse rate feedback is produced and this makes the green house effect weak . calculation of the rate of change of temperature with height is very subtle and sensitive to tiny changes , and so it is very difficult to find out whether the model represents the reality or not .
