མིག་སྔར་ཡོད་པའི་འཚོལ་བཤེར་ཡིག་ཆ་བཞིན་ཉར་བ

as a mother holds dear and protects her only child,
ཇི་ལྟར་མ་ནི་བུ་སྡུག་གཅིག་པུ་ལ། །རྟོག་ཅིང་དེ་སྲོག་སྲུང་བར་བྱེད་པ་ལྟར།

if a monk were to do such things as these, he would immediately disqualify himself as a monk,
དགེ་སློང་གིས་གནས་དེ་ལྟ་བུ་བྱས་ན་བྱས་མ་ཐག་ཏུ་དགེ་སློང་དུ་མི་རུང་བར་འགྱུར། །

and brilliant, as a miraculous show of rain and thunder began.
གསལ་བ་དང་། ཆར་འབེབས་པ་དང་། གློག་འབྱིན་པའི་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་དག་བྱ་བར་བརྩམས་སོ། །

as this was to be saṅgharakṣita’s last life as a sentient being, a smile had already spread across his face and,
དེ་སེམས་ཅན་སྲིད་པ་ཐ་མ་པ་ཡིན་པས་འཛུམ་སྔོན་དུ་བཏང་སྟེ།

དགེ་སློང་གིས་གནས་དེ་ལྟ་བུ་བྱས་ན་བྱས་མ་ཐག་ཏུ་དགེ་སློང་དུ་མི་རུང་བར་འགྱུར།

as the new monk’s preceptor was a hermit living in the forest, the monk took the nāga disguised as a brahmin to see him and said,
དགེ་སློང་དེའི་མཁན་པོ་དགོན་པ་པ་ཞིག་དགོན་པ་ན་འདུག་པས་དེས་དེ་ཁྲིད་དེ་དེའི་གན་དུ་སོང་ནས་སྨྲས་པ།

saṅgharakṣita went forth into his teachings and served as a custodian, living together with five hundred others.
དེའི་བསྟན་པ་ལ་འདི་རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་ནས་ཞལ་ཏ་བྱེད་པར་གྱུར་ཅིང་དེ་ལ་ལྷན་ཅིག་གནས་པ་ལྔ་བརྒྱ་ཡོད་པར་གྱུར་ཏོ། །

i ask that you, reverend, accept charge of me as a novice for as long as i live.”
བདག་ཇི་སྲིད་འཚོའི་བར་དུ་དགེ་ཚུལ་དུ་བཙུན་པས་གཟུང་དུ་གསོལ།

if the blessed one was about to foretell rebirth as a hell realm being, the rays of light would fade into the soles of his feet.
སེམས་ཅན་དམྱལ་བར་སྐྱེ་བར་ལུང་སྟོན་པར་བཞེད་ན་ནི་ཞབས་ཀྱི་མཐིལ་དུ་ནུབ་པར་འགྱུར།

as soon as they sat down, the monastery caught alight, burst into flames, and was engulfed in a fire that began to burn as a single, giant inferno.
དེ་དག་འཁོད་པ་དང་དེ་དག་གི་གཙུག་ལག་ཁང་དེ་འབར་རབ་ཏུ་འབར་ཀུན་དུ་རབ་ཏུ་འབར་ཞིང་མེ་ལྕེ་གཅིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་ནས་སྲེག་པར་བརྩམས་སོ། །

if the blessed one was about to foretell a reign as a king of the world, the rays of light would fade into the palm of his right hand.
འཁོར་ལོས་སྒྱུར་བའི་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་ལུང་སྟོན་པར་བཞེད་ན་ནི་ཕྱག་མཐིལ་གཡས་པར་ནུབ་པར་འགྱུར།

if the blessed one was about to foretell a reign as a powerful king of the world, the rays of light would fade into the palm of his left hand.
སྟོབས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོས་སྒྱུར་བའི་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་ལུང་སྟོན་པར་བཞེད་ན་ནི་ཕྱག་མཐིལ་གཡོན་པར་ནུབ་པར་འགྱུར།

yet out of consideration for me, this brahmin tiṣya has offered to share our prize––a most beneficial arrangement. i shall give Śārikā to him as a wife.
འདི་ལྟར་བྲམ་ཟེ་སྐར་རྒྱལ་འདིས་ཁོ་བོ་ལ་འདི་ལྟ་སྟེ། ལོངས་སྤྱོད་དག་གིས་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་ཀྱི་བགོ་བཤའ་བྱས་པ་ནི་ཕན་མང་དུ་བཏགས་པ་ཡིན་གྱིས། འདི་ལ་ཤཱ་རི་ཀཱ་དེ་ཆུང་མའི་དོན་དུ་སྦྱིན་ནོ།

and if he is, the postulant’s induction into the novitiate begins with his going for refuge and promising to live as a novice. this is how the postulant is inducted into the novitiate.
