a common criticism of jury simulation research, applicable to the present study, is that the fictional nature of the transcript, the written format in which it was presented, and the lack of tangible consequences for decisions reduces external validity (bartol & bartol, 2004; kapardis, 2014). in particular, the current case involved relatively uncomplicated testimony from which jurors were required to draw conclusions, and therefore, was less demanding of their cognitive capabilities compared to real trials. this may have only served to under-represent the effect of stereotypes in the present research however, as increasing the complexity of fictional trials, and thereby the cognitive load experienced by jurors, increases their tendency to rely on stereotypes when making decisions (bodenhausen & lichtenstein, 1987; van knippenberg, dijksterhuis, & vermeulen, 1999).
the measure assessing categorisation as a typical murder also provided some tentative support for this prediction, with the feminine defendant being seen as less like a typical murderer compared to the masculine defendant, but only when the defendant was a woman. while the pairwise comparison was significant, the interaction was not statistically significant despite the effect size being the same size as the significant effect for the defendant gender.
