chemisch gesehen gehört saltidin zur gruppe der karbonate – das sind ester der kohlensäure – und trägt den zungenbrecher-namen 1-(1-methylpropoxycarbonyl)-2-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperidin. deutlich einfacher ist sein von der who vergebener internationaler freiname: icaridin – oder eben der von saltigo vergebene handelsname: saltidin. dieser ölige wirkstoff, für den saltigo derzeit noch das patent hält, kam 1998 auf den markt. er löste den weniger gut verträglichen wirkstoff diethyltoluamid, kurz: deet, ab. saltigo liefert den wirkstoff und das know-how für die verarbeitung, seine kunden aus der pharma- und kosmetikindustrie mischen ihn dann nach ihren eigenen rezepturen mit lösungsmitteln und fügen meist auch noch einen duftstoff hinzu.
