when the event befalleth -
যখন কিয়ামতের ঘটনা ঘটবে ,

fretful when evil befalleth him
যখন খারাপ অবস ্ থা তাকে স ্ পর ্ শ করে তখন অতীব ব ্ যথাতুর ,

and , when good befalleth him , grudging ;
আর যখন কল ্ যাণপ ্ রাপ ্ ত হয় , তখন কৃপণ হয়ে যায় ।

on the day when it befalleth in earnest , and they are ordered to prostrate themselves but are not able ,
একদিন চরম সংকট দেখা দেবে , আর তাদের ডাকা হবে সিজদা করতে , কিন ্ তু তারা সক ্ ষম হবে না ।

and whatsoever of affliction befalleth you is owing to that which your hands have earned ; and he pardoneth much .
আর বিপদ-আপদের যা তোমাদের আঘাত করে তা তো তোমার হাত যা অর ্ জন করেছে সে-জন ্ য , আর তিনি অনেকটা ক ্ ষমা করে দেন ।

no calamity befalleth save by allah 's leave . and whosoever believeth in allah , he guideth his heart .
আল ্ লাহর নির ্ দেশ ব ্ যতিরেকে কোন বিপদ আসে না এবং যে আল ্ লাহর প ্ রতি বিশ ্ বাস করে , তিনি তার অন ্ তরকে সৎপথ প ্ রদর ্ শন করেন । আল ্ লাহ সর ্ ববিষয়ে সম ্ যক পরিজ ্ ঞাত ।

naught of distress befalleth the earth or your persons but it is inscribed in the book even before we have created them . verily with allahs that is easy .
এমন কোনো বিপর ্ যয় পৃথিবীতে পতিত হয় না আর তোমাদের নিজেদের উপরেও নয় যা আমরা ঘটাবার আগে একটি কিতাবে না রয়েছে । নিঃসন ্ দেহ এটি আল ্ লাহ ্ ‌ র জন ্ যে সহজ ।

how then , when some ill befalleth them because of that which their hands have sent forth and then they come to thee swearing by allah : we meant naught save kindness and concord .
এমতাবস ্ থায় যদি তাদের কৃতকর ্ মের দরুন বিপদ আরোপিত হয় , তবে তাতে কি হল ! অতঃপর তারা আপনার কাছে আল ্ লাহর নামে কসম খেয়ে খেয়ে ফিরে আসবে যে , মঙ ্ গল ও সম ্ প ্ রীতি ছাড়া আমাদের অন ্ য কোন উদ ্ দেশ ্ য ছিল না ।

and verily there is among you he who laggeth behind , and if an ill befalleth you , he saith : surely allah hath bestowed favour on me in that i was not present with them .
আর তোমাদের মধ ্ যে এমনও কেউ কেউ রয়েছে , যারা অবশ ্ য বিলম ্ ব করবে এবং তোমাদের উপর কোন বিপদ উপস ্ থিত হলে বলবে , আল ্ লাহ আমার প ্ রতি অনুগ ্ রহ করেছেন যে , আমি তাদের সাথে যাইনি ।

and among mankind is he who worshippeth allah upon a narrow marge so that if good befalleth him he is content therewith , but if a trial befalleth him , he falleth away utterly . he loseth both the world and the hereafter .
আর লোকদের মধ ্ যে এমনও আছে যে আল ্ লাহ ্ ‌ র উপাসনা করে কিনারায় রয়ে , ফলে যদি তার প ্ রতি ভাল কিছু ঘটে সে তাতে সন ্ তষ ্ ট হয় , কিন ্ তু তার প ্ রতি যদি বিপর ্ যয় ঘটে সে তার মুখ ফিরিয়ে ঘুরে যায় -- সে ইহকাল হারায় আর পরকালও । এটিই তো এক সুস ্ পষ ্ ট ক ্ ষতি ।

if good befalleth thee ( o muhammad ) it afflicteth them , and if calamity befalleth thee , they say : we took precaution , and they turn away well pleased .
আপনার কোন কল ্ যাণ হলে তারা মন ্ দবোধ করে এবং কোন বিপদ উপস ্ থিত হলে তারা বলে , আমরা পূর ্ ব থেকেই নিজেদের কাজ সামলে নিয়েছি এবং ফিরে যায় উল ্ লসিত মনে ।

the likeness of that which they expend in this life of the world is as the likeness of a wind wherein is intense cold , it befalleth the tilth of a people who have wronged themselves , and destroyeth it . allah wronged them not , but themselves they wrong .
এ দুনিয়ার জীবনে যা কিছু ব ্ যয় করা হয় , তার তুলনা হলো ঝড়ো হাওয়ার মতো , যাতে রয়েছে তুষারের শৈত ্ য , যা সে জাতির শস ্ যক ্ ষেত ্ রে গিয়ে লেগেছে যারা নিজের জন ্ য মন ্ দ করেছে । অতঃপর সেগুলোকে নিঃশেষ করে দিয়েছে । বস ্ তুতঃ আল ্ লাহ তাদের উপর কোন অন ্ যায় করেননি , কিন ্ তু তারা নিজেরাই নিজেদের উপর অত ্ যাচার করছিল ।

and of mankind is he who worshippeth allah as on edge ; if there befalleth him good , he in contented therewith , and if there befalleth him a trial , he turneth round on his face ; he loseth the world and the hereafter : that indeed is a loss manifest !
আর লোকদের মধ ্ যে এমনও আছে যে আল ্ লাহ ্ ‌ র উপাসনা করে কিনারায় রয়ে , ফলে যদি তার প ্ রতি ভাল কিছু ঘটে সে তাতে সন ্ তষ ্ ট হয় , কিন ্ তু তার প ্ রতি যদি বিপর ্ যয় ঘটে সে তার মুখ ফিরিয়ে ঘুরে যায় -- সে ইহকাল হারায় আর পরকালও । এটিই তো এক সুস ্ পষ ্ ট ক ্ ষতি ।
