eine seltenheit ist die vegetation der insel sokotra, die im arabischen meer zwischen jemen und somalia liegt. im tropenhaus begrüßt den besucher ein tropischer regenwald. außer pflanzen aus der ganzen welt haben hier auch wunderhübsche schildkröten und einige terrarien und aquarien ihren platz: eines mit afrikanischen chipoka-maulbrütern, zwei asiatische (ein terrarium davon vertritt das meeresufer der mangrovenwälder und ist mit schlammspringern besetzt, im zweiten wohnen labyrinthfische), und die letzten drei sind amerikanische aquarien: sie stellen das „schwarze amazonien“ vor, bewohnt von skalaren, neonfischen und süßwasser-rochen. im subtropischen gewächshaus besuchen wir die anden, den himalaja und neuseeland und eine kleine ausstellung über die entstehung der braunkohle im erzgebirgsvorland. im subtropischen gewächshaus finden wir auch eine exposition fleischfressender pflanzen und eines der seltensten ausstellungsstücke des ganzen gartens: einen hundertjährigen afrikanischen nadelbaum afrocarpus gracilior.
