model to test the role of both light and bacteriochlorophyll (bchl) in co evolution. experiments 26 have shown that during anaerobic light growth when photometabolism occurred, co is not released, regardless of the light intensity used or the bchl content of the cells. co was only detected after the anaerobic, lightgrown microbes were exposed to both light and air. although these aerobic conditions were not supportive of photosynthetic cell development, or photometabolism, it was expected that co release would be correlated with the cell concentration of bchl, the substrate for gas evolution. this did not occur and only trace amounts of co were produced by the ceils. in contrast, when aerobic, dark-respiring r. sphaeroides or r. acidophila were placed under similar light-reaction conditions, the bacteria evolved three to four times more co than photosynthetically grown cells, even though the air-grown microorganisms contained from 12 to 173-fold less bchl. clearly, these reports cast doubt upon the relationship between lightdependent co evolution and photosynthetic metabolism with bchl as a substrate for gas production. as a result, an alternative mechanism has been suggested 26 in which light-absorbing compounds like chlorophyll serve as catalysts in co-evolution. in this system, photosensitized chlorophyll, for example, can react in air to produce singlet oxygen. singlet oxygen, in turn, produces hydrogen peroxide which, finally, reacts with cellular components to release co. a related mechanism has been proposed in the light of results from studies using liver tissues in which peroxidation of membrane phospholipid appeared to promote co formation. 24'27 light-dependent chemical systems catalysed by biologically produced light-absorbing compounds might also operate outside the living cell and help to maintain a saturating concentration of co in oceanic surface waters.
