ཡག་པོ་

and when night had fallen,
མཚན་མོ་ལ་བབ་པ་དང་།

and when night had fallen, set out for the blessed one.
མཚན་མོ་ལ་བབ་པ་དང་། བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ག་ལ་བ་དེར་སོང་སྟེ་

morning, noon, evening, the first watch of the night,
སྔ་དྲོ་དང་། གུང་དང་། ཕྱི་དྲོ་དང་། མཚན་མོའི་ཐུན་དང་པོ་དང་།

i have safeguarded him the whole day so you must safeguard him through the night.
ཁོ་བོས་ནི་ཉིན་ཐོག་ཐག་ཏུ་བསྲུངས་ཀྱིས། ད་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་མཚན་མོ་སྲུངས་ཤིག །

i have safeguarded him the whole day, but you must safeguard him through the night.
ཁོ་བོས་ཉིན་ཐོག་ཐག་ཏུ་བསྲུངས་ཀྱིས་མཚན་མོ་སྲུངས་ཤིག །

i woke you in the middle of the night and asked you to teach the dharma.”
མཚན་མོའི་དགུང་སངས་ཀྱིས་བཞེངས་ལ་ཆོས་བསྟན་དུ་གསོལ།

“it would be good were you to come out.
གལ་ཏེ་ཕྱིར་འབྱུང་ན་དེ་ལྟ་ན་ལེགས། །

the latter half of the last watch of the night, pre-dawn, dawn, before sunrise,
ཐུན་ཐ་མའི་ཕྱེད་དང་། སྐྱ་རེངས་མ་ཤར་བ་དང་། སྐྱ་རེངས་ཤར་བ་དང་། ཉི་མ་མ་ཤར་བ་དང་།

“son, is it good for you to go forth?”
དེ་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་སྨྲས་པ། བུ་ཁྱོད་ལ་རབ་ཏུ་འབྱུང་བ་ལེགས་པ་བྱེད་པ་ཡིན་ནམ།

as it is in the nature of such beings to watch over the world with their buddha eye during the three times of the day and night,
ཉིན་ལན་གསུམ་མཚན་ལན་གསུམ་དུ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་སྤྱན་གྱིས་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལ་རྣམ་པར་གཟིགས་ནས།

o blessed one! it would be good if, in your compassion,
ཀྱེ་མ་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ཀྱིས་ཐུགས་བརྩེ་བའི་སླད་དུ་གང་གིས་

a monk other than the instructor then consults the sundial and announces the month, the day, the time of day or night, and the hour.
དེའི་འོག་ཏུ་སློབ་དཔོན་མ་ཡིན་པ་དགེ་སློང་གཞན་གང་ཡང་རུང་བ་གཅིག་གིས་གྲིབ་ཚོད་གཞལ་བར་བྱ་ཞིང་སྐྱེས་བུ་དང་། རྩ་བ་དང་། ཉིན་མཚན་གྱི་ཆ་དང་། དུས་ཚོད་ཀྱང་བརྗོད་པར་བྱའོ། །

“father, mother, it is good for me to go forth.”
ཡབ་ཡུམ་བདག་ལ་རབ་ཏུ་འབྱུང་བ་ལེགས་པ་བགྱིད་པ་ལགས་སོ། །

“monk, the import is what i need. what good is a lengthy explanation?
དགེ་སློང་ཁོ་བོ་ལ་ནི་དོན་དགོས་ཀྱི་ཚིག་ནི་ཤིན་དུ་མང་པོས་ཀྱང་ཅི་བྱ་སྟེ།

there is nothing to alms, oblations, ritual sacrifices, good deeds, or bad deeds.
སྦྱིན་པ་མེད་དོ། །མཆོད་སྦྱིན་མེད་དོ། །སྦྱིན་སྲེག་མེད་དོ། །ལེགས་པར་སྤྱད་པ་མེད་དོ། །ཉེས་པར་སྤྱད་པ་མེད་དོ། །

after performing rites for protection, good luck, and success, the five hundred merchants together with the venerable saṅgharakṣita
དེ་ནས་ཚོང་པ་ལྔ་བརྒྱ་པོ་དེ་དག་ཚེ་དང་ལྡན་པ་དགེ་འདུན་འཚོ་དང་ལྷན་ཅིག་དགེ་མཚན་དང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་དང་། བདེ་ལེགས་སུ་འགྱུར་བ་དག་བྱས་ཏེ།

he thought, “as far as culinary pleasures are concerned, these ascetic sons of the Śākya have it good.
