im jahre 1322 erwarb die reichsstadt nürnberg vom kloster heilsbronn dessen brothaus am salzmarkt und baute es zum rathaus um. da das rathaus zugleich als gerichtsstätte diente, wurden die kellerräume zu den nürnberger lochgefängnissen umgewandelt.
in 1322, nuremberg, the free city of the empire, purchased the bread house on salt market which belonged to the monastery of heilsbronn, and proceeded to transform it into their city hall. since the city hall also served as a law court, existing cellar rooms were turned into the nuremberg dungeons (lochgefängnisse).

das nur zwölf meter breite rathaus beherbergte im erdgeschoss das brothaus sowie im keller die amtszelle und das städtische weinhaus. in den obergeschossen befinden sich die ratsstuben für die einstigen beiden kammern des stadtregiments, wovon die kleinere im ersten stock vom inneren rat und die größere im zweiten stock vom Äußeren rat genutzt wurde.
the city hall, which is only 12 metres wide, housed on the ground floor the so-called “brothaus” (a hall for selling bread), and in the basement, the jailhouse plus the communal wine cellar. located on the upper floors are the two assembly halls of both chambers of the city council, with the smaller room on the first floor used by the inner council, and the larger room on second floor used by the outer council.
