de pudicitia does not offer a satisfactory argument for assuming that tertullian opposes a bishop living outside africa, and besides, the account of hippolytus (philos. 9, 12), which attacks callistus and his "lax" practice, is based on an entirely different situation from that which is to be deduced from the treatise of tertullian. tertullian evidently attacked bishop agrippinus of carthage (cypr., ep. 71, 4). edd. of text: e. preuschen, t 1910.
