the museum has its roots in a painting collection donated by napoleon and chaptal to the city of mainz in 1803.

he then went to lycée chaptal in paris to follow preparation courses in order to qualify for grandes écoles (elite schools).

after being denied entry into École des beaux-arts, he moved to paris in 1882, where he began teaching mathematics at collège chaptal.

i warmly recommend these museums because of their awesome atmosphere and free admission: the musée de la vie romantique, in hôtel scheffer-renan, at 16, rue chaptal (metro saint george) where you can have a cup of tea or coffee in a small garden and feel miles away from the traffic jams and crazy parisian atmosphere!
