said he, “rather, their chief may have done it; so question them, if they can speak.”
Гуфт: «Балки бузургтаринашон чунин кардааст. Агар сухан мегӯянд, аз онҳо бипурсед».

had god willed, they would not have done it; so leave them to their fraud.
Агар Худо мехост, чунин намекарданд. Пас бо дурӯғе, ки мебофанд, таркашои соз!

had we commanded them to kill themselves or abandon their homes, only a few of them would have done it.
Ва агар ба онон фармон дода будем, ки худро бикушед ё аз хонаҳоятон берун равед, андаке аз онон фармон мебурданд.

but if your lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and that which they invent.
Агар Парвардигорат мехост, чунин намекарданд. Пас бо тӯҳмате, ки мезананд, раҳояшон соз,

he said: surely (some doer) has done it; the chief of them is this, therefore ask them, if they can speak.
Гуфт: «Балки бузургтаринашон чунин кардааст. Агар сухан мегӯянд, аз онҳо бипурсед».

and had we prescribed unto them: slay yourselves or go forth from your dwellings, they had not done it, save a few of them.
Ва агар ба онон фармон дода будем, ки худро бикушед ё аз хонаҳоятон берун равед, андаке аз онон фармон мебурданд.

on the day when every soul finds all the good it has done presented. and as for the evil it has done, it will wish there were a great distance between them.
Рӯзе, ки ҳар кас корҳои нек ва корҳои бади худро дар баробари худ ҳозир бинад, орзу кунад, ки эй кош, миёни ӯ ва кирдори бадаш масофае бузург бувад.

"now you have told us the truth," they answered, and they sacrificed it, though they would rather not have done it.
Гуфтанд: «Акнун ҳақиқатро гуфтӣ». Пас онро куштанд, ҳарчанд ки наздик буд, ки аз он кор рӯй гардонанд.

"on the day when every soul will be confronted with all the good it has done, and all the evil it has done, it will wish there were a great distance between it and its evil.
Рӯзе, ки ҳар кас корҳои нек ва корҳои бади худро дар баробари худ ҳозир бинад, орзу кунад, ки эй кош, миёни ӯ ва кирдори бадаш масофае бузург бувад.

and if they had been entered upon from all its [surrounding] regions and fitnah had been demanded of them, they would have done it and not hesitated over it except briefly.
Ва агар аз атроф хонаҳояшонро муҳосира кунанд ва аз онҳо бихоханд, ки кофир шаванд, кофир хоҳанд шуд ва андаке ҳам мӯҳлат раво нахоҳанд гузаронд.

and had we decreed for them to slay themselves or to leave their homes and families, only a few of them would have done it; and if they did what they are advised to, it would be good for them, and would have strengthened faith.
Ва агар ба онон фармон дода будем, ки худро бикушед ё аз хонаҳоятон берун равед, андаке аз онон фармон мебурданд. Ва ҳол он ки агар пандеро, ки ба онон дода шудааст, кор мебастанд, барояшон беҳтар ва бар асосе устувортар буд.

and (moreover) he hath put affection between their hearts: not if thou hadst spent all that is in the earth, couldst thou have produced that affection, but allah hath done it: for he is exalted in might, wise.
Дилҳояшонро ба якдигар меҳрубон сохт. Агар ту ҳамаи он чиро, ки дар рӯи замин аст, харҷ мекарди, дилҳои онҳоро ба якдигар меҳрубон намесохтӣ, Вале Худо дилҳояшонро ба якдигар меҳрубон сохт, ки Ӯ пирузманду ҳаким аст!
