دعوى شخصية: مقامة على شخص معين دون غيره، تستند إلى حق شخصي. تقابلها الدعوى العينية in rem التي تقام في مواجهة الكافة أو من يهمه الأمر للمطالبة بحق انتفاع أو ارتفاق أو ما إلى ذلك (راجع in rem).

حكم شخصي: صادر ضد شخص معين. هذا الحكم وإن كان فاصلاً بالنسبة للجميع غير أنه لا يلزم في موضوعه غير الشخص المحكوم عليه وشركائه في الفعل أو التقصير. وهذا نقيض القرارات العينية التي تصدر في الأشياء in rem وتلزم أثارها الجميع دون استثناء binds all the world.
