जैसा कि इसके शीर्षक से स्पष्ट है कि पुस्तक की विषयवस्तु मोरक्को से इराक तक एक अरब जन का अस्तित्व है ऐसे लोग जो कि इस प्रकार परम्परा से आबद्ध हैं कि स्टीवर्ट ने पक्षी इसकी तुलना करते हुए लिखा है , “ अरबवादियों की एक अलग सामान्य संस्कृति है जिसे वे इसे हमिंग पक्षी के घोंसले की भाँति चाह कर भी हर बार फेंक नहीं सकते” अरबवासियों द्वारा अपने देशों को एक रख पाने में असफल रहने के पिछले रिकार्ड की अवहेलना करते हुए स्टीवर्ट भविष्यवाणी करते हैं कि , “ कुछ भी हो अरब संघ की शक्ति बनी रहेगी” । 1962 के बाद शायद ही ऐसा सम्भव रह सका कि अरबी भाषा ही केवल जन की परिभाषा कर सकी और इतिहास और भूगोल नकार दिये गये ।
