why did the idols , whom they worshipped as a means of pleasing god , not help them ? in fact , they proved to be the cause of their going astray and it were lies which they had falsely invented lies .
तो ख़ुदा के सिवा जिन को उन लोगों ने तक़र्रुब के लिए माबूद बना रखा था उन्होंने उनकी क्यों न मदद की बल्कि वह तो उनसे ग़ायब हो गये और उनके झूठ और उनकी परदाज़ियों की ये हक़ीक़त थी

interspersed throughout the novel are such musings as these : ' why did god create a world , where there is so much selfishness , envy and injustice ?
उपन्यास में निरन्तर इस प्रकार के विचार बिखरे हुए हैं : ईश्वर ने ऐसी सृष्टि की रचना ही क्यों की जहां इतना स्वार्थ , द्वेष औऱ अन्याय है ?

so why did their gods not help them , those they set up as gods besides god to bring them nearer to him ? no indeed ! they failed them utterly : it was all a lie , a fabrication of their own making .

moses selected seventy men from his people to attend our appointment . . when an earthquake jolted them to death , moses said , " lord , had you wanted to destroy them , why did you not destroy them and me before . are you destroying us for what the fools among us have done ? this is only a trial through which you cause some to go astray and guide others . you are our guardian . forgive us and have mercy on us ; you are the best of those who forgive .
मूसा ने अपनी क़ौम के सत्तर आदमियों को हमारे नियत किए हुए समय के लिए चुना । फिर जब उन लोगों को एक भूकम्प ने आ पकड़ा तो उसने कहा , " मेर रब ! यदि तू चाहता तो पहले ही इनको और मुझको विनष्ट़ कर देता । जो कुछ हमारे नादानों ने किया है , क्या उसके कारण तू हमें विनष्ट करेगा ? यह तो बस तेरी ओर से एक परीक्षा है । इसके द्वारा तू जिसको चाहे पथभ्रष्ट कर दे और जिसे चाहे मार्ग दिखा दे । तू ही हमारा संरक्षक है । अतः तू हमें क्षमा कर दे और हम पर दया कर , और तू ही सबसे बढ़कर क्षमा करनेवाला है
