il terreno sul quale già sorgeva una costruzione, probabilmente di tipo rurale, fu acquistato dal colleoni nel xv secolo. completamente sprovvisto di strutture difensive come torrioni e merli che normalmente circondano i castelli che nascono come roccaforti militari, il castello di cavernago viene concepito come residenza familiare della famiglia colleoni.
