after returning to his friend, god promised that he would give midas a gift. "i will give you whatever you want," said the king. midas replied to the god: "turn all that i touch into gold." though the god was sad, because midas was so stupid, he gave him the gift which he had requested. the king departed rejoicing. he took off a branch from the tree, and immediately became a golden branch. when he touched the door of his house, there was also a golden door. even the water in which he placed his hand was of gold. thus the king hoped that he would soon become very wealthy.
