one needs to know their identity and who they are , thus being important. identity puts together our personality or individuality. false perception of self leads to delusional identity. in the book, fiela se kind, three year old benjamin, who appears as white by race is taken in by the komoeties , a coloured family, and conforms to a coloured identity. later in the book, benjamin is taken away by the census men to go and live with his rightful family who are of white race. benjamin struggles to adapt to his white family, longing for the comfort and care of his adoptive black parents. these circumstances lead to the identity crisis that benjamin undergoes. yet later, he begins to accept his new identity as lukas van rooyen. the key symbols in the story reinforce its main theme : identity
