partendo dalla constatazione che noi conosciamo il mondo esterno soltanto per via di processi psichici, sia che ci riferiamo al sensismo, ossia alla dottrina che fonda la conoscenza sui sensi, sia all'idealismo puro che la fonda sul pensiero (fino al punto di concepire, in certi sistemi, il mondo esterno come una proiezione del pensiero soggettivo), le filosofie tradizionali tutte sostengono che al sistema conoscitivo, alla scienza concreta, vanno premesse talune norme del pensare, trovate puramente nel nostro io. questi princìpi primi, che si facevano apparire indiscutibili appunto perché indimostrabili, vennero chiamati categorie.
