critical debate on contents of books- the author of this book writes and makes it clear the challenges of relativity against religion with a sharper focus on christianity. the strength of this writing lies in its analytical capacity and a wide variety of referencing in academic terms to support the argued points. however, this writing needs to be critically analyzed in a few areas. the writer has included different perspectives from figures like joseph ratzinger, john hick, and many other academicians. it offers a complete overview of how such forms of relativism challenge the concepts that have traditionally been considered in terms of the truth of religions. it had a deep analysis on relativism as the main challenge to traditional religion in general with its focus on christianity and was backed up by relevant examples, some from contemporary times and some more from history. like the author discusses how religious pluralism challenges the christian belief that it alone is true. there is, however, a demerit in it from the point of a major case of disproportion in the approach of argumentation. the author has a tendency to approach relativism and by completely weighing his judgment in favor of , such it is the threat to traditional religion. in that part of the book, he has not set a sufficient room to look at the positive side relativism. relativism can also be an approach to incite intercultural and interreligious discussions, it can provide a constructive role in promoting tolerance and mutual understanding. again, this remarkable potential is virtually ignored in this book. for instance, views on ratzinger concerning relativism, wherein he sees relativism as a new dictator pressing religious freedom, are often framed in a very exaggerated manner without leaving room for the possibility that relativism can be employed to counter the ideologies of religion which are the ones usually causing such conflict. in addition, the study of this book has been mainly focused on the threats propagated by the diversities of culture and religion to the stability of traditional values. however, there has not been much of an exploration and discussion regarding how this diversity can make way for revision in religious interpretation. in the age of globalization, it is undeniable that diversity as far as cultures and religions has the potential to threaten the practice of traditions, but it also brings the possibility for a religion to stand actualized in an ever-advancing world. the author is deficient here since he did not emphasize this sort of inclusive approach, which allows traditional religions to co-exist with other diverse paradigms of world views. next, although the author has successfully demonstrated how relativism can undermine the moral authority of religions through denial of the concept of absolute truth, he does not offer a clear middle ground between absolutism and relativism. the discussion of relativism is often characterized as defensive, as though there were no room for compromise. for example, issues regarding human rights and individual freedom are often related to relativism but have not been dealt with in much detail. the author seems to have a bias toward absolutism in religion, which may be less applicable in today’s highly pluralistic society. moreover, the author does not emphasize how epistemological change would cause from relativism to revivalism in more inclusive modes towards contemporary contexts. for instance, such concepts as "local truth", as proposed by john hick, would have the potentialof enriching religious experience by acknowledging the different human approaches to making sense of the reality of divinity. unfortunately, the current book regards that only in a threatening light without accounting for the constructive aspects of promoting inter-religious debate. to sum it up, the author of this book has put in place a resounding argument as to how relativism threatens religious tradition. however, the viewpoint given by the author is very confined. the observation by the author on the phenomenon of relativism and the challenges that come to religion form the strength of this book. yet, it still brings some weaknesses, where the evaluation of relativism has shown unbalance because it is not seen as an opportunity but only brings risk to religion. the author has to be equal and inclusive enough to widen the discussion that would make the book more effective. last but not least, the author should consider relativism as a ground to create dialogue between religions and cultures in a world that gets increasingly complicated.
