l’iconografia della scultura raffigurante marsia appeso all’albero è trasmessa da due modelli antichi, molto simili da un punto di vista figurativo ma distinte dal tipo di marmo con sui sono realizzate: il tipo del cosiddetto marsia bianco, diffuso da un numero maggiore di copie (fra cui quella sempre agli uffizi, inv. 1914 n. 199), e il tipo del marsia rosso, così denominato dal marmo pavonazzetto utilizzato per gli esemplari da esso derivati (almeno tre, quelli noti).la scelta del materiale fu probabilmente dettata dall’intento di dare all’opera l’effetto coloristico dello scorticamento.
the iconography of the sculpture showing marsyas hanging from the tree is transmitted by two antique models, very similar from a figurative point of view, but distinguished by the type of marble they are made from: the type of the so-called white marsyas, which circulated in a larger number of copies (including that, again in the uffizi, inv. 1914 no. 199), and the type of the red marsyas, thus named after the purple-veined marble used for the exemplars derived from it (at least three of which are known). the choice of the material was probably dictated by the intention to give the work a colouring appropriate to the flayed skin.
