૧૯૬૦માં નાગા લોકોના પ્રતિનિધિમંડળે દેશના રક્ષણમાં વધુ ભાગ ભજવવા માટે અલગ રેજિમેન્ટ ઉભી કરવાનો પ્રસ્તાવ મૂક્યો. સ્વતંત્રતા બાદ ઉભી કરાયેલી તે પ્રથમ રેજિમેન્ટ હતી. ૧૯૫૭માં નાગાલેંડમાં જ્યારે આતંકવાદનું વર્ચસ્વ હતું. ત્યારે નાગા લોકોનું સંમેલન થયું તેમાં વિવિધ માંગણીઓ સરકાર સામે મુકવામાં આવી જેમાં નાગાલેન્ડ અલગ રાજ્ય, નાગા સમુદાયની સૈન્યમાં અલગ ઓળખ માંગવામાં આવી. ૧૯૬૩માં અલગ રાજ્યની માંગ પૂરી કરાઈ અને સાત વર્ષ બાદ રેજિમેન્ટ ઉભી કરાઈ. આ રેજિમેન્ટની ખાસિયત એ હતી કે તે સમયે અનેક શરણાગતિ સ્વીકારેલ આતંકવાદીઓને દેશભક્તી સાબિત કરવા અને સૈન્યમાં જોડાવા તક અપાઈ. તે સમયે કેટલાકને સીધા જ જુનિયર અફસરની પદવી આપવામાં આવી.[3] જોકે તેમની તાલીમ પૂરી શકાઈ તે પહેલાં જ પૂર્વોત્તરમાં અનેક સ્થળોએ આતંકવાદ શરૂ થઈ ગયો. તાલીમ આપવાનું પડતું મૂકી અને પલટણોને સીધી જ કાર્યવાહીમાં ઉતારવામાં આવી.
