above all in the first centuries after christ, the names of various caesars of the roman empire (e.g. nero, domitian, gaius etc.) were adapted, sometimes in quite enterprising ways, in such a fashion that their cross-total resulted in the number 666. so for instance the title “neron kaisar” in hebrew results in the cross-total of 666, and so do the words from josh 13,22 “balaam the son of beor, the diviner”. the same is true of the greek term “lateinos” (the latin, i.e. roman kingdom?) and many others.
