friction and wear pose significant concerns in sliding contact applications involving stainless steel components, especially in industries such as food packaging and processing, medical equipment, automotive, and industrial machinery. while stainless steel is preferred for its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in these industries, friction, and wear can compromise the performance and durability of components and even lead to risks of food contamination. polytetrafluoroethylene (ptfe) has been widely utilized as a lubricant due to its low shear strength and excellent self-lubricating properties, effectively reducing friction and wear. however, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis regarding the friction and wear behaviour of stainless steel under reciprocating sliding contact with ptfe. this study aims to analyse the tribological behaviour of stainless steel and ptfe through experimental investigations. the friction and wear experiments were conducted under ambient conditions in a ball-on-flat arrangement following the standard testing procedures of astm g133, astm g171, astm f732, astm d1894, and astm g132. the tests were carried out at a constant sliding speed of 0.1 m/s and a nominal load of 1 n, 3 n, 6 n, 9 n, 12 n, 15 n, and 18 n, with each test repeated 21 times. each sample was inspected three times, with various radius position configurations of 2 mm, 6 mm, and 10 mm. the results revealed that the coefficient of friction decreases by 10% with an increased load, while the specific wear rate, wear track width and contact area increase by 30%, 10%, and 27% respectively. by analysing the coefficient of friction, wear rate, and wear track width, industries can optimize the design and performance of stainless steel and ptfe components in applications such as food packaging and processing.
